William G Whittington was primarily a painter of seascapes and coastal scenes in watercolour. He had a relatively short exhibiting career, which may have been interrupted by the First World War. He exhibited a few works at the Royal Academy and a larger body of work at the Dudley Gallery in London. Most of his work depicted vessels at sea, such as tea clippers and Thames barges. Despite his preference for the sea, he actually lived at Asford in Middlesex on the southern perimeter of what is now Heathrow Airport. Though he did name his house "The Anchorage"

This work is a watercolour which has been reframed to conservation quality behind a double wash-lined mount and with a gold strip moulding. The watercolour was originally laid down on cardboard but this was removed for conservation reasons. An inscription on the back of this cardboard provided the title of the work, his name and his address. The inscription was salvaged and has now been attached to the new backboard. The "Lower Hope" is a stretch of the River Thames estuary between Tilbury and Cliffe and the artist has depicted two fully loaded barges ploughing up the river under sail. Overall, including frame, the work measures 19.25(h) by 22.5(w) inches. If a purchaser should require this item to be posted then for safety reasons the glass would need to be removed.
Very good condition and framed with conservation materials.
