Joos van Cleve (Kleve 1485 - Antwerp 1540),
16th century Flemish school circle

Madonna with a child (Madonna cherry)

Oil on table
cm . 65 x 47
framed 92 x 69

The painting is based on a Leonardo da Vinci prototype, unfortunately lost, but returned in an adaptation of one of his students, Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli "Giampietrino". This guy took the name of "Madonna with Cherries", as the child holds the red-colored fruit symbol of passion.

The composition collected in the first decades of the sixteenth century a success so high, to influence some Flemish masters;

Among them, the painter from Antwerp Joos van Cleve, who made the Madonna delle Ciliegie one of the cornerstones of his studio. To date, there are several dozen identified versions attributed to Van Cleve's laboratory.

Our brilliant painting could therefore be one of the replicas of the master studio, taken from the famous original. The Italian model, the workshop of Joos van Cleve, with his many collaborators, including his son Cornelis van Cleve (Antwerp 1520-1567 approx), were inspired by this description, producing a large number of variants, but adapting them in typical ways of Flemish mannerism.

The frame that accompanies this beautiful table is not of the period; it will be up to the future buyer to decide to maintain it, to benefit from the certainly decorative character or to remove it.

The state of preservation of the table is excellent, and the range of colors has remained intact in all its splendor; there are some small touches and a slight felting, which have a minimal effect on the reading of the work.
