A fine example of a late-nineteenth century copper coach plate attributed to a member of the Smith Cuninghame Family of Caprington Castle, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
Circa 1890.

Displays a full heraldic achievement with two crests and mottos above a full coat of arms and Supporters in the form of two horses at liberty argent, maned and hoofed or.
Motto: 'Via tuta virtutis'.
The crest of a right hand holding a plumb rule with the motto 'Ad amussim' applies to Cuninghame, while the crest of a ship in drestress with the motto 'At spes infracta' ascribed to the family of Dick of Prestonfield. Through various marriages and inheritances, it would seem that the coat of arms with the motto 'Via tuta virtutis' on the coach plate was made for Douglas Alexander Smith Cuninghame.
