These pieces were created in England in the Victorian period. They are beautiful decorative works, composed of hundreds of different types of seashell. The shells – which include scallop, oyster, mussel, clam, sea-snail, common otter, tellin shells, and many more – have been carefully positioned using wires. In this way, the shells are made to resemble a bunch of flowers.

Shell-work items like these were called ‘Sailor’s Valentines’ in the Victorian period. They acquired this name since sailor’s, returning home from long periods at sea, would often bring back shell arrangements to give to their girlfriends or wives.

These shell flower arrangements are displayed underneath glass domes, to protect the shells from dust and other damaging influences. The domes are set on oval-shaped wooden bases, each set on four feet.
