These exquisite ceramic plaques are delicately painted in the lighthearted Rococo style, and each feature whimsically romantic courtship scenes in the interiors of a large stately house.

The first plaque depicts a gentleman of the house in a blue frock coat passing a letter to a lady, as she appears to escape his advances through a nearby door. The second plaque shows a butler in a red coat whispering, or perhaps blowing a kiss, to a passing maid carrying a chamberpot or urn. Both plaques are signed 'B. Gaillaux' after their decorator, and the second plaque bears the additional inscription 'd'Apres Erdmann', suggesting that it is likely decorated after an older painting. Both plaques are set within intricately carved giltwood frames.

These charming scenes, of nobility and servants alike, allude to the notion that love is classless and knows no boundaries of wealth.
