A good 19th century Italian marble chimneypiece in the Renaissance style.

Below the shelf carved with an egg and dart and dentil moulding the frieze centred by a shield flanked either side by a lamia and scrolling foliated tendrils and supported by projecting corbels each carved with a lamia and stylised foliage. The pilasters with foliated capitals, each carved with an eagle resting on an urn with vine and acanthus leaves emerging from a foliated and gadrooned urn.

The current chimneypiece was acquired by Mr & Mrs Walter Rosen during one of their annual trips to Europe in the early 1920s for their Renaissance style townhouse in Manhattan, New York. It is depicted in situ in Sir John Lavery’s famous painting of ‘Mrs Rosen Bedroom’ executed in 1926. In the 1970s it was moved to Rosen House, Caramoor where the Rosens had established the distinguished music and arts centre that continues to flourish today.
