William Adolphus Knell was a marine painter who was born in London in 1805. He was the father of William Callcott Knell and Adolphus Knell. He was one of several 19th century marine artists who started to paint in the formalised Dutch tradition and appears to have adopted an ‘English School’ style towards the latter part of his career. Whilst the majority of his scenes are of the English coast, he also painted French, Belgian and Dutch coastal and marine scenes, occasionally including vessels from a much earlier period. Knell exhibited mainly at the British Institute between 1825–1867, also at the Royal Academy from 1825–1866, as well as at Suffolk Street. In 1847, he won second prize in the Westminster Hall competitions with a work entitled ‘Destruction of Toulon, 1793’. Knell painted ‘The Landing of the Prince Regent at Dover’ and ‘The Review of the Fleet at Spithead’ for Queen Victoria.
Examples of his paintings can be found at the Blake Museum, Gloucester Museum, Guernsey Museum, National Maritime Museum, RNLI Museum and many others.
The paintings are housed in new English made gilt frames, which are in excellent condition.
