This sailor's woolwork picture is notable for the number of vessels it portrays. Featuring a fleet of eight ships in full sail on the high seas. Worked in crewel with long and short stitches onto sail cloth. The rigging executed in cotton and linen threads. The craft flourished in the third quarter of the 19th century. The modern frame of this work is fitted with UV conservation glass to help prevent further deteriation of the wools which can fade heavily in strong light.
Some deteriation of certain coloured wools consistent with acid contained in the dyes used at that time. The sails of the vessels in this picture are bereft of wool, with no apparent evidence that they were ever embroidered, thus revealing the sailcloth backing.
