This is a fully restored Victorian barograph by renowned makers, Richard Freres of Paris. The instrument is set in a glass dome which was a popular option around the turn of the 20th Century. It carries a very early reference number on the brass baseplate - 1249. Although these early barographs by Richard Freres had excellent movements the cases were 'box like' & very utility looking. Clearly, this one has been professionally re-housed in this sumptuous domed case. All the brasswork has been cleaned & re-lacquered including the original ink well & the Oak base has been re-polished. Comes with working mercury thermometer.
See extract from James Hicks Catalogue, circa 1913, describes the domed barograph as 'under a glass shade, very handsome'! Upon closer inspection of this picture it can be seen that the movement is precisely of Richard Freres design indicating that the movement was manufactured in Paris with the original case replaced by J. Hicks.
A rare & beautiful barograph.
