Painting oil on canvas with dimensions of 70 x 60 cm without frame and 90 x 80 with frame depicting an outdoor peasant scene of the painter Theodorus Netscher (Bordeaux 1661 - Hulst 1728).

The painting you asked me to examine is a painting, oil on canvas, depicting a peasant scene with a clear eulogy to the bucolic life, typical of the modus operandi of the French painter T. Netscher.

In this canvas we immediately perceive the overflowing personality of the Netscher easily intuitive for the traditional color range present here and for a clear preference for drawing where both the richness of the details and a very methodical and rational arrangement of each individual character or object emerge.

This composition, painted by the artist at the height of his maturity, perfectly reflects the phase that painting is experiencing in those moments halfway between a sense of Mannerist inspiration and an adhesion to the naturalistic observation that the Caravaggesque imprint will develop a few years more.
in there.

Netscher was especially famous for his ability to paint imaginary but real landscapes and to insert them into scenes that are sometimes peasant and sometimes only perspective; our painter transformed the architectural capriccio of the previous century, rigid, cold and boring into something unique and particular in the full Roman and above all French baroque style of the time, wanting to attribute a particular meaning to each building and to each scene represented inside.

Looking at the works of Netscher we usually find ourselves in front of a film of impressions taken from reality but assembled in an almost metaphysical way, a genre that founded the painter himself and that gave rise to a real school in all of France.

These scenes of common life of an almost archeological type denote a more extravagant and erudite study of the landscape obtained through the annihilation of half tones, obscuring the light areas destroying the brightness of the skies and the first floors; but despite this the wise perspective use, the sagage distribution of the spaces both in the first floors and gradually fading make his paintings light, sparkling and of great atmospheric and chromatic splendor.
