This spectacular clock set is based on the works of the esteemed Neoclassical artist James Pradier (French, 1790-1852), whose sculptures can be found in nearly all of Paris's major landmarks and museums. Pradier modelled all the bronze figures and reliefs in this set, including the exquisite figure of Penelope which sits atop the central clock case.

The set consists of a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is formed in two sections, with a rectangular clock case plinth supporting the patinated bronze sculpture above. The case is veneered in the striking green mineral, malachite, and features decorative ormolu banding. The clock dial is positioned to the centre of the case, and and there are two ormolu relief panels either side showing Classical figures. On top of the plinth sits the figure of Penelope, a character in Homer's Odyssey and a symbol of marital fidelity in Western Neoclassical art. She is shown with her loom by her side, and the figure bears the signature for 'J. Pradier'.

Pradier also modelled the full-length Classical female figures which are shown holding aloft the flanking ten-light candelabra, shown in elegant, sensual poses with beautifully-detailed drapery. The candelabra bases are decorated in a similar manner to the clock base, featuring malachite veneers, ormolu banding and ormolu relief panels.

All of the bronzes in the set were cast by the illustrious Susse Freres foundry, and there are stamps and marks for 'Susse Freres' on each of the bronze figures.

The clock set dates to the mid-19th Century, with the malachite veneers being a later addition.
