Good quality and unusual 19th Century oak cased ‘Admiral Fitzroy’s Storm Barometer’ - No. 1414 in essentially original condition. The porcelain barometer plates bearing twin rack-and-pinion operated verniers for ‘10 am Today’ and ‘10am Yesterday’, and signed by the makers. The inset mercury Fahrenheit thermometer is also signed. The plates are protected by bevelled plate glass. The original concealed wide-bore barometer tube terminates in rectilinear cistern cover.

Negretti & Zambra were the foremost Scientific Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was manufactured, at public expense, primarily for Life-boat Stations and fishing ports, and was assembled only using screws and without the use of glue.
