This is a very rare travelling lantern clock with alarm in a remarkable state of preservation by William Sharplin who was working from 1749 to 1772 in New Street , Cloth fair , West Smithfield , London . His name is also spelt Sharpelein
The 5 inch by 7 inch arched brass dial with applied chapter ring with inner quarters marked and a single steel hand with an alarm disc to the centre. The makers name is applied to a boss in the arch and the clock would date circa 1760.
These small lantern clocks are timepieces only ,with alarm on a separate train placed within the plates were used for wealthy clients to travel with in order to awaken on time during the journey with rendered the need for striking unnecessary and small size and weight were required for portability.
I have shown it photographed next to a standard sized repeating carriage clock for size comparison.
The general problem with these clocks is originality as , very often , parts are missing or they have been later converted to anchor escapement.
On examination of this clock it appears that apart from the missing side doors and the finial surmounting the bell everything is original including the bell, fretts , verge ,feet , dial and clockwork . It really is in a remarkable state of preservation and I have deliberately left it in that condition. The photographs are deliberately lighter than in real life in order to show detail.
The wheel work is free and the clock functions with finger pressure but it really needs a sympathetic service if it is to be used continually . This can be discussed by the buyer as to what extent restoration is required.
The total height of this clock is only 7 1/4 inches and would have been mounted on the wall by its hook and retained by the steel strikes although many people choose to place them on wall brackets.
The images should provide provide all the information required but prospective buyers (or their expert advisor ) are very welcome to personally view this clock to see how nice it is.
If the asking price is paid in full I will ship , restore to the buyers requirements and guarantee the clock for 12 months in England , Wales and the Scottish Lowlands.
Any lesser offers accepted will be considered a trade sale with shipping the responsibility of the buyer
