This is a lovely Mahogany cased barometer by Short and Mason with the mechanism of grained and lacquered brass construction with a first quality 8 day duration drum recorder with compensated balance on platform escapement bearing Pat. No. 3715.02 and the serial number 5021 .
It is mounted on a conventional base of conical form with static gear bearing the same serial number . It has a captive winding key and top cover.
The mechanism is set on a conventional chassis bearing a manufacturers plate "Short and Mason , London" with fluted border and raised on four turned pillars and having a seven capsule set with adjustment wheel over , grained white metal recorder arm with tension adjustment. The base mounted arrester bar set between stop pins. The recording range is 28 -31 inches of mercury.
It retains the original ink bottle and dipper maintained in a tubular flanged holder. The whole contained within its original well executed polished mahogany case which had faded to a mellow orange colour with an excellent polish and finish. The base with a double chart door and several paper charts . The cover of heavy bevelled five glass design reflecting the period of neo classical design
Please see Banfield Edwin - Barometers , Aneroid and Barographs p118 fig 104 for an image and description of a very similar item.
As can be seen from the images this is very handsome instrument and being made from mahogany with a decorative case it would suggest it was made for a domestic rather than industrial setting. It is in perfect working order but the clock work will be professionally serviced by a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and sold with 12 months guarantee at the full asking price.
The original gilding is present .It is 15 inches wide ,9 inches tall and 9 inches deep
The overall condition is excellent and original but like all items over 100 years there are the odd marks , the only one worth mentioning is a tiny flick of wood missing off the edge of the rear corner (illustrated). There are also some light scratches to the top glass.
At the full asking price I will deliver / ship the item free of charge in England Wales and the Scottish lowlands . A full 12 months guarantee will be provided under these circumstances
If a lesser offer is accepted it will be considered a trade sale with shipping / collection the responsibility of the buyer
