The subject of this Kangxi Blue and White porcelain tea canister is a scholar in relaxation. This kind of scholarly motif has been a time-honored subject in Chinese decorative arts. As seen on this porcelain, the decoration features a boy attendant serving an educated man, who is enjoying the tranquility of the picturesque landscape, away from his official burdens. The painting is executed delicately with an elegant and refined brush. The cover is brass.
Chinese Kangxi Blue and White porcelain rivals other Chinese blue and white produced during earlier periods. It has sophisticated designs inspired by the designs that went before it, and great technical expertise which produced a brilliant under-glaze cobalt blue, and an attractive white slightly bluish glaze applied to a white body.
During this period there were a very large number of kilns at Jingdezhen, the main center of production producing thousands of pieces of blue and white porcelain.
Chinese Kangxi Blue and White porcelain of rounded form often showed a scene similar to this canister which ended in rockwork, clouds or plantains. To differentiate between outdoor Kangxi scenes such as the one on this tea canister and earlier Transitional wares note the grass, waves, or clouds at the edges. The Transitional period piece is typically painted more casually, and with less detail. On Kangxi wares the details are painted more carefully.
The brass fittings are later probably European.
