A large gathering of animated dogs of varying breeds in a landscape.

Oil on canvas, c. 1670

Dimensions: 123 x 184cm (48.5 x 72.5in)

Provenance:

Private collection, Somerset.

Jacques de Claeuw is well known for his vanitas still lifes and flower painting, but he also painted a few game pieces including dogs. There are two known attributed works featuring dogs which are probably late works by the artist which also show similarities to the work of his son, Adriaen de Grijef (1657-1722).

We are grateful to Dr Fred Meijer, Senior Curator of Dutch and Flemish Old Masters of the RKD, The Hague, for this attribution under inspection of a colour photograph.
