Painting oil on board depicting a stormy sea measuring 66 x 116 cm without frame and 76 x 126 with frame, signed on the back H. Dubbels pinxit.

Dubbels ( Amsterdam 1621 - 1676 ), a marine painter, lived mainly in Amsterdam, where he was dean of the Guild of San Luca in 1650. His works are stylistically similar to those of Willem van de Velde the Younger, Jan van de Cappelle and above all Simon of Vlieger.

In this painting, oil on panel, depicting a stormy marina with a landscape view and boats crashing against a cliff we can notice the pictorial power of Dubbels skillful both in the perspective construction of the stormy marina with a skilful play of positions both in the delicate representation of the landscape view very articulated with a special mention for the water that goes to break against the cliff.

We find ourselves before a sensational storm scene where there are two ships now at the mercy of the wind and especially the sea about to crash into a cliff.
The effects of light create a visual drama in the marriage between the darkness of the sea and above all the majesty of its waves with the dynamic and expressive force of storm clouds.

The true magic of the painting is the very personal use that the painter makes of light and colors, with the chiaroscuro effects able to accentuate the three-dimensionality and the movement.

To be noted, given the non-customary, the fact that the painting is signed behind with the inscription H. Dubbels pinxit and an inventory number (No. 115).
