A pocket knife, fashioned as an arm and hand from a single piece of mother of pearl with the fine steel blade set within. The blade stamped W R, perhaps for William IV, above the name HURST.
As a point of interest, a Francis John Hurst (1878-1957), worked as a pearl and ivory fluter in Cambridge Street (Sheffield) and when he retired he was probably the last Little Mester working at this skilled craft. A 'little Mester' was a self-employed worker who rented space in a factory or worked from their own workshop. They were involved in the making of cutlery or other smallish items; the term used almost exclusively to describe such craftsmen of the Sheffield area. Perhaps Francis John Hurst was descended from the Hurst named on this blade. English circa 1840. 3 1/8 in long
