This large mantel clock was made in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, with the malachite veneer being a more recent addition. With its curved, scrolling outline and central strings fixed to a crossbar, the clock is shaped like a classical lyre. Since these U-shaped harps were used in antiquity, the Neoclassical ornament that decorates the piece is fitting.

The clock has a rectangular malachite-veneered base, decorated along its edge with a gilt bronze mount which takes the form of a ribbon entwined with a laurel branch. The base is further articulated by gilt bronze beading, which traces the upper edge of the rectangular block, and a series of floral swags, suspended from the neck of the piece.

Above, a large gilt bronze acanthus leaf unfurls in the space between two scrolls, forming, from the front, the impression of a classical ionic capital. These scrolls extend upwards, and form the outline of the malachite-veneered lyre arms.

Between the arms of the lyre, at the centre of the piece, is the enamel clock dial, which is surmounted by a crinkled gilt bronze ribbon, tied into a bow. The retailer's mark 'S H Paris’ is signed on the back of the dial.

Three gilt bronze winged cherubs play on the piece, two on the shoulders of the clock — where they appear to have just suspended a flower garland across the strings — and one on the top, perched on the crossbar. It is possible this arrangement was inspired by a Roman fresco at Herculaneum, which depicts three cherubs, one holding a flower wreath, playing with an oversized lyre.

This lyre-shaped clock, with its three charming gilt bronze cherubs, is a striking piece that will add a Neoclassical flair and character to an interior.
