A rare French Japonisme ormolu and silvered bronze cut glass vase by L'Escalier De Cristal, Paris, circa 1870. Provenance: The Strong Museum, Rochester, New York Profusely decorated with flying fish, langoustines, and seaweed on a pierced Stand, mounted with tiger's eye spheres. The marchand-e´diteur, L'Escalier de crystal was established in 1802 by Madame De´sarnaud, supplying clocks, lamps and other objets d'art to important European families. From 1840, the firm participated in and were awarded medals at most of the international exhibitions of the 19th century, finally being awarded a Gold Medal in Paris in 1900. The store became an icon of French luxury. The firm commissioned manufacturers to supply individual components which were then assembled to the firm's own designs - much in the tradition of the 18th century marchands-merciers. L'Escalier de crystal collaborated throughout the 19th century with famous designers such as Viardot, Lie`vre, and also the atelier of Baccarat for glass. A nearly identical vase was sold at Christie's New York, 26 November, 2013, lot 157 ($137,500) A similarly-decorated jardinière sold at Christie's London, 14 March 2013, lot 225 (£47,475) Measures: 22" high x 6.5" wide. Very good condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Normal wear consistent with age and use.
