Created France at the turn of the Century, this mantel clock has been crafted from the rare green / purple gemstone, flourite, and is mounted with gilt bronze sculptures of Venus, the Goddess of Love, and two winged cherubim.

The flourite clock base is oblong-shaped, with a stepped central part. This base is raised on gilt bronze turned, toupie feet, and mounted, on its projecting central section, with a gilt bronze plaque, showing four winged cherubim at play. The curved ends of the base are set with a pierced frieze of scrolling, foliate forms. The block is ringed by a decorative gilt bronze band and a higher line of beading.

Surmounting the central section of the base is a square, flourite block, with a central, circular white enamel dial at its centre. This features Arabic numbers, painted with floral swags, and inscribed with the name of the maker, ‘Lerron/Paris’. The enamel face is enclosed within a circular gilt bronze frame, with gilt bronze foliate mounts decorating the flourite block around it.

The clock face is topped by a gilt bronze sculpture of a winged cherub, who is depicted in flight, with a swirling cloud beneath him. He leans out, with his left hand, to caress the face of Venus, who stands to the left of the clock. Venus flirtatiously lifts her dress to reveal the thigh of her pointed left leg. There is a flaming urn at her feet. Standing on the right of the clock is another winged cherub, who is similarly set on a cloud, and who lifts his right hand to his face, in an expression of surprise. The discarded bow and arrow at his feet suggests that these two cherubs are likely representations of Cupid, the god of erotic love who would shoot individuals with his arrow, filling them with uncontrollable desire.

In its decoration, this clock focuses on the universal and timeless theme of love and desire. It will make a wonderful addition to an interior, either modern or antique in style, or the ultimate gift for a lover on Valentine's Day.
