‘A Market Scene in Brittany, France’

An utterly charming painting full of colour, depicting a busy Bretton market. Women can be seen in traditional black dresses with white bonnets, stall holders selling their wears, a pretty young lady standing centre as is quite often the case in Walbourn’s works. Numerous people can be around the market, children and a young boy with donkey and cart. A church can be seen in the distance.
Signed lower right Ernest Walbourn with plaque lower centre of the frame ‘A Market Place Brittany E Walbourn’

It is quite unusual to find a French market scene by Walbourn in fact, I have never seen one.

Provenance - I have had this painting for around 45 years having purchased it directly from a member of the Battersby family, famous for the manufacture of hats.
Condition - Presented within its original gilt gesso frame which bears a few losses but doesn’t detract from its beauty. This painting is behind glass so the painting has been beautifully preserved and has never been relined.

Size to include frame: H62.3cm D6.7cm L82.5cm Image only: H40.6cm L61cm
