Venus cries at the death of Adonis

oil on canvas 50 cm high. x width 67 cm.
(with frame 62 x 81)

The Latin poet Ovid tells the myth of Venus and Adonis in Book X of his Metamorphoses.
The story of this love between the goddess and a mortal concludes tragically with the accidental death of Adonis, killed by a wild boar that he had wounded with his spear. From the blood of Adonis, Venus hatched a flower: the anemone.

The death of Adonis is the theme of this painting, made according to the style of the Bolognese artist Emilio Savonanzi, which highlight both the influence of the Roman Baroque painter Guercino, as well as the inspiration for chiaroscuro strongly inspired by Caravaggio.

According to the biographer Cesare Malvasia, the painter Emilio Savonanzi was born in a noble family in Bologna and was a pupil of Giovanni Battista Cremonini, Denys Calvaert and Ludovico Carracci in Bologna and later by Guido Reni in Rome.

The vertical and visually narrow frame of this painting allows the painter to bring the protagonists of the episode to the top.

Adon is lying on the ground with his head thrown back. The goddess is desperate as she tries to dry her tears, with the little Cupid trying to console her.

Of great importance is the landscape landscape, made vivid by the twilight lights, almost to emphasize the sentimental element of the event.

Condition of the object The canvas is in excellent condition; we only carried out a conservative surface cleaning, which made the colors more vivid (in detail, the photo can be visualized before this intervention). With antique gilded frame.

The table is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. We take care of the organization in a professional and safe transport. For more information www.antichitacastelbarco.it/spedizioni.html
