A monumental and stunning Derby Porcelain campana vase beautifully painted by Thomas Steel, one of the most significant and talented Derby artists. Gilded satyr mask handles and elegantly painted fruits and decoration designate this wonderful vase as one of the finest pieces offered from the Derby factory. This exact work is illustrated in two important books, D.A. Hoyte's The Fruits of Perfection on page 6, plate 2 and in D. Manship's Artists and Craftsmen of the 19th century Derby China Factory page 149, plate 153. In addition, this vase formerly belonged to The Collection of Valerie and the late Harry Cordwent and, more recently, The Anthony Hoyte Collection. Impressive provenance, craftsmanship and proportion make this one of the finest pieces of 19th century English porcelain. Excellent condition.

Marks: Crossed batons and 'D' in red, gilder's numeral '2' in red for James Clark,

circa 1815.
