A rare early antique Karabagh runner with outstanding colours and a very interesting design. Woven with bold geometric motifs and an interesting Fachralo style one way design.  The colours are vibrant and saturated with the early dyes we can see such as the aubergine/purple and soft yellows.  A wonderful barbers pole border minor border with ivory dyes balances the rich colours and deep indigo blue background.  The vibrant colours would brighten an entrance hall or corridor and could work in both a traditional and contemporary setting. Dating from 1870-1880 in our opinion the dyes and weave are consistent of this period of weaving in the Caucasus.

The condition is good for its age with a flatter pile which is lower in places and some minimal areas of wear showing.  But for a runner woven around 1870 it really is in very good order and with good underlay which we supply it would help preserve it for many more years use on the floor.  We have secured the ends and tidied up the sides with antique wool to compliment the runners colours.

These pieces were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced these interesting long corridor runners. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the Western market.

Please request a home visit to arrange a convenient time to view this beautiful antique Caucasian Karabagh runner in your home.  We love travelling all over the UK and Europe showing carpets in situ and would love to help you.
