This sumptuous clock set is the work of the renowned Charles Oudin firm in Paris, and showcases exquisite bronze work, elegant design and a masterful clock mechanism. Charles Oudin, founder of the firm in the late 18th Century, rose to prominence initially as a student of the watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. He eventually gained fame and recognition in his own right for the technological advancement and complexity of his timepieces.

This clock set was produced by the firm at the height of its popularity in the 19th Century, when it was receiving many important commissions and exhibiting at all of the major expositions of the day. The set is made up of a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra.

The central clock is formed with an oval gilt bronze case, decorated around its exterior with fine gilt bronze rams' heads and topped with a gilt bronze urn surmount. It is supported by two gilt bronze putti with lower bodies formed as acanthus leaves, themselves sitting on an oval gilt bronze base. The clock base incorporates Sevres style porcelain plaques showing flowers on white ground inside a turquoise border.

The clock case contains the clock face, with two circular dials shown in a vertical formation. The upper clock dial is set with Roman numerals and is signed 'CH Oudin / 52 Palais Royal, Paris'. The lower astronomical dial shows the months of the year, days of the month, moon phases and astronomical signs. The reverse of the movement is marked 'Ches Oudin / Paris. / 8242 17 1'. The clock face also includes two porcelain plaques decorated with angelic winged putti holding flowers.

The pair of flanking candelabra are decorated in a similar manner to the clock. Cast in gilt bronze, they are formed with a central gilt bronze putti supporting five lights, all sitting on gilt bronze bases incorporating Sevres style porcelain plaques, decorated with flowers.
