Set in black wood frame, the reverse glazed to reveal erroneous Cosway signature
The eldest child of John Foldsone, Anne Mee was educated at Madame Pomier's school in Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London. She began to paint at age 12, with tuition from George Romney, and after her father died in 1784, did so to support her family.
Anne Mee exhibited occasionally at the Royal Academy between 1815 and 1837. Many of her miniatures, as is apparent in this portrait, show the influence of the work of Richard Cosway, which is not surprising as Mee painted a lot of the beauties of the Windsor court and would no doubt have come across Cosway's work. However, her miniatures are more stippled in approach - particularly in the sitter's face and they lack the fluid brushstrokes that Cosway excelled at. It is not known who the sitter is but the clue must be in the gold initial S formed as a necklace around the sitter's neck.
