A Carved Grand Tour Head of a Roman Empress
After the Antique
Italian, probably Rome
Late 18th or early 19th century
Marble, on a green scagliola socle
Height of head: 23 ½ cm. / 9 ¼ ins, overall 37 cm. / 14 ½ ins

The idealised head finely carved all’antica with three rows of stylised twists of hair on the front head-dress, which are secured and tied to the back bun by two interlocking ribbons of hair on either side. The hairstyle inspired by those of the Flavian period in ancient Rome (late 1st century AD), notably those portraits assumed to depict the Empress Domitia Longina (National Museum, Warsaw), wife of the Emperor Domitian (51-96 A.D.), and Julia Titi Flavia (Rome, Capitoline Museum), daughter of the Emperor Titus (39-81 AD).
