These remarkable paintings appear to have been commissioned by Matthew Raper, who was a member of the East India Company’s Council in Canton from 1767 until 1777, and who evidently took a close interest in Chinese musical instruments - even playing on the erhu (which he calls the ‘yee-yine’) himself, ‘in one of their Bands’. These pictures seem to have formed the basis for two sheets of drawings by Raper himself (now in the British Library) and of the engraved illustrations of instruments in John Barrow’s Travels in China (1804). See pp. 6-9 of this catalogue for a fuller account of these pictures and of the introduction of Chinese music to Westerners.
