in gilt-metal mount with velvet reverse, set in the original tooled brown leather travelling case

Sold with a letter to Miss Deacon, dated 1957, former owner of the portrait, written by Her Majesty the Queen's lady in Waiting, Katherine Seymour, outlining Her Majesty's decision not to buy this present example because she owned one already.
.
From 1909 Prince Albert attended the Royal Naval College, Osborne as a navel cadet. He came bottom of the class in the final examination, but despite this, he progressed to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1911. Albert was commissioned as a midshipman on 15 September 1913 and a year later served in World War 1. He saw action aboard HMS Collingwood in the Battle of Jutland, 31 May-1 June 1916, which ended as a tactical victory for the German Empire but a strategic victory for the United Kingdom.

With the advances in photographic technology, it became fashionable to have your photograph taken and then to have it hand painted - which meant that more and more people could possess a "miniature" of themselves at much less cost than an original painting. Miss Deacon is known to have worked in a photographic studio but it is not known which one. Presumably the initials AS on this miniature reveal the identity of the photographic studio's name.
