This lovely engine turned lignum vitae string barrel is unusually modelled in the form of a beehive. The base unscrews and the top is fitted with a cutter, all supported on three turned feet. String barrels were a common requisite in homes and businesses throughout the 19th century, before the invention of sticky tape, all parcels were secured with string.
