The tradition of micro-mosaic making in Italy is one which dates back to the late 18th Century. Over the course of the 100 years which followed, mosaicists honed their skills and developed new techniques which would lead to bigger and better pieces. This large antique micromosaic panel is a fine example of this micro-mosaic tradition continuing well into the second half of the 19th Century.

This very fine micromosaic work is especially notable for its large size: many thousands of tesserae (or mosaic tiles) have been painstakingly arranged to produce this wonderful image of a lady, in period dress, peeping at an admirer kissing her portrait on the wall. The scene is set within a grand and colourful interior, with the man shown standing on his tiptoes on an upholstered chair. The mosaic is set into a rectangular panel of black marble, all sitting inside an elegant gilt bronze frame.
