Black Forest carvings have always been popular across Europe and the rest of the world since the second quarter of the 19th century. Grand tourists would bring home these wonderful souvenirs as mementos of their visit to this beautiful area of Germany. This unusual example portrays an owl with wings slightly unfurled, having just landed on its oak leaf bough, or perhaps about to take flight. Owls, along with bears, hares, foxes, dogs and ibex were popular subjects for the craftsmen of the Black Forest. I've handled many Black Forest pieces in my time but never one as animated and finely carved as this example, dating from the end of the 19th century.

Old restored crack around the legs and tail area. Restored chip to left ear. Some evidence of minor historical worm infestation to reverse of branch. Other than this normal wear and tear consistent with age and use.
