wearing pink dress with white lace collar and pearl at her shoulder, her hair upswept.

The present lot is a rare example of Meyer's work, painted whilst he was a pupil of Christian Friedrich Zincke, hence the 'Z' above the initials 'JM'.

The young Meyer came to England from Germany circa 1749, aged fourteen. He studied firstly at the St. Martin's Lane Academy before becoming a pupil of Zincke 1757-8. Like much of Meyer's early work, the present lot bears a resemblance to that of his contemporary Gervase Spencer. There are several reasons why Meyer might have chosen to indicate the identity of his teacher on an early commission. The elderly Zincke, by now almost in retirement, would have been better known than the young Meyer; the piece may have been a combined work, with Zincke responsible for the enamelling of the frame; Meyer may have wanted to indicate his respect for his master; or Zincke may have insisted that whilst working within his studio that his protegé included his initial.

The sitter is possibly, Mary, second daughter and youngest child of Robert Colville of Tradigal, Argyllshire, baptised in 1743.
