An elegant Sheraton period mahogany free standing writing table with inset leather lined top. The rectangular top with rounded projected corners, turned tapering fluted legs topped with ‘tassels’. Three mahogany lined frieze drawers with later brass handles. The whole is very much in the influence of Gillow’s of Lancaster. Note two interesting features the vertical strips on the rounded corners, and small flush locking drawers in the frieze towards the back of the table. English 1790

18th century English Furniture ‘The Norman Adams Collection. You will find an almost identical item of fine English furniture in the Grade 1 listed National Trust property; Uppark House, South Harting, Petersfield. Apparently this table (NT 137689) was presumably acquired by Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh (1754-1846). It has been suggested that it could be the work of the firm of cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster.
